What do we do?

At Southover, we feel it’s important for teachers and parents to come together to ensure we give our children the best possible school experience. We achieve this through our Parent Teacher Association (PTA), “Friends of Southover School”, or “The Friends”, as we are affectionately known.

Southover School is what it is today, in part, because of the dedication of the parents.

The aim of The Friends is to enhance and improve the learning experience of the children, as well as making sure their day-to-day life at school is happy, comfortable and enriching. We do this by fundraising and organising fantastic events throughout the academic year.

These include a Summer Fair, a Christmas Fair and discos, but we are always looking for fresh ideas and new, fun ways to raise money!

As a registered Charity, Southover Friends has raised money for the school swimming pool and play trail. It also pays for their ongoing maintenance. In addition, we help with regular annual commitments such as subsidising the Christmas pantomime and parties and subsidising the Year 6 residential trip, whilst building up a reserve fund for any major expenses.

We have provided financial help for all kinds of activities including: laptops, cosy corners for classrooms, a reading week, Science Technology Engineering & Maths (STEM) week, outdoor reading/writing sheds, music stands for the orchestra, wet weather gear for infants, recorders, wet play and playground equipment, white boards, rugs, books, gazebos, Christmas crackers for every child at Christmas, the list really does go on and on!

As school budgets are squeezed ever tighter, we are supporting more teachers’ requests for essential equipment and classroom items which enable lessons to continue to be fun and interactive. We’re helping to give our children the best possible opportunities to learn. The Friends is an increasingly integral part of the school and we need your support!

The advantages: Why get involved?

  • For your child! Years of research has proven that children do better in school when their parents are involved, both at home, and in school. If you care, they care!
  • For you! Get connected. There’s no better way to know what’s happening in our school. You’ll meet other parents and teachers, build rapport, discuss issues that are on your mind, and have a voice. You really can make things happen!
  • Be part of the solution! Our PTA always achieves its goals. We get an enormous amount of satisfaction from seeing our ideas come to fruition, and seeing the children benefiting from that.

Great! How do I get involved?

We meet at various times throughout the school year, however we are not just about meetings; we are about action! We welcome your involvement and any input is helpful, no matter how small. Do you have an idea for how we can raise funds? Could you offer your time to run a stall at one of our events? Are you creative and able to design our posters for us? Or do you bake the most amazing cakes that we can sell at our bake sales? We are grateful for any and all support – even for things we haven’t thought of.  Please email us, or find us in the playground, and let us know how you could make a difference to the school.
