Diversity Group

We are committed to ensure ‘Everyone is valued for who they are and knows they belong’.

To help support this we set up a Diversity Group of governors, parents and teachers.

Our Diversity group have met four times this year to share ideas to improve what we offer in terms of increasing awareness of diversity and ensuring everyone feels valued and knows they belong. We have been working to increase diversity and awareness including:

  • More assemblies themed on diversity

  • modern reading texts telling stories that reflect the diverse society we live in

  • a more representative outlook on British society in our curriculum coverage

  • working on being an Anti-Racist school and increasing staff training – Unconscious Bias and Anti-Racism

Miss Miller has coordinated and promoted children entering a competition for those children lucky enough to speak more than one language. We have some gorgeous pieces of writing from children presented in two languages including: Ukrainian Arabic and Chinese. They are in English and another language so we can all understand and will be on the school website to celebrate the skills and diversity.

We were pleased to welcome the Imam from the Brighton mosque who came and talked with Y3/4 about what it is like being a Muslim in England including the logistics of praying at the right times when at school.

If you would like to join in the group then please come to our meetings. They are held in the library and children are welcome to come and read a book as we talk and listen.
