Dear Parents & Carers,
CHRISTMAS AT SOUTHOVER 2020
In a year when almost everything has been different, and Christmas is no exception, we are determined to give our best effort in providing a host of activities to make Christmas at Southover feel as special as possible. In calendar order, here’s what we have in store…
Friends of Southover Non-School Uniform Day & Hamper Raffle
Whilst we’re not able to hold our traditional festive fair this year, nothing is going to stand in the way of the Friends’ hugely popular Christmas hamper raffle! Friday 4th December will be a NON-SCHOOL UNIFORM day and we ask for children to bring in hamper donations as follows:
* Donations to be placed on tables in the playground please
Tickets will be on sale next week (week beginning 30th November) via text. Look out for details from the Friends. The draw for this fabulous fundraiser will take place on Friday 11th December at 4pm. Winners will be notified and will need to collect their hampers from school during the final week of term.
With great thanks to one of our parents, Gemma Coe, we are able to offer a keeping fit and Christmas combo on Monday 7th, Tuesday 8th & Wednesday 9th December. Dance instructor Gemma has choreographed a Christmas dance routine and each year group will get to learn and perform a section outside on the playground. This will then be recorded and a video produced for the whole-school to enjoy via private link on Mr Fadden’s YouTube account which will be emailed to you directly.
Children are encouraged to dress up in Christmas themed clothing suitable for dancing in: anything from wearing a Christmas hat to dressing as a Christmas tree. Could this be the year in which every child gets to be Mary?! Please send costumes in in a named bag as soon as possible. Children will be performing on the following days:
Monday 7th December – Years 2, 3
Tuesday 8th December – Years 4, 5 and 6
Wednesday 9th December – Year R and 1
Are you able to help? Whilst our video production skills have increased dramatically over the last few months, we are still not experts! If you have skills in recording and video production and are available to help us with our Christmas Dance project, please contact Lisa Walker on 01273 473015 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Sticking with tradition, Year R, 1 and 2 will be making Christingles and heading up to the church for a Christingle service on Tuesday 8th December. A service will be held for each year group separately and although – sadly - we won’t be able to invite parents and carers this year, we will be able to share some lovely pictures of this event with you. Please could you send a large orange into school by Friday 4th December. Please note that LONG HAIR MUST BE TIED BACK FOR THE CHRISTINGLE SERVICE.
Christmas Class Videos
In a school that takes pride in our number of Christmas productions each year, we couldn’t let this one go! As detailed in the letter dated 16th November, each class will be involved in the production of a short video (the content will vary throughout the school) and these will be shared via private link on Mr Fadden’s YouTube account which will be emailed to you directly.
Christmas Lunch, Christmas Jumpers and an Elf Run
As you will already be aware, Tuesday 15th December is Christmas lunch day. Please ensure you place any orders for Christmas lunch by Friday 27th November. Children are invited to wear Christmas jumpers for the day and each class will take part in an ‘Elf Run’ to raise money for St. Peter and St. James’ Hospice, a charity very close to our hearts here at Southover. Each child will be given an elf hat to wear for the run and they can wear it for lunch too. We are asking for a suggested donation of £2.00 per child for this fundraising event, to be collected in classes on the day. You can find out more about St Peter and St James’ Hospice at https//stpjhospice.org
During the final week of term, each class will hold a class party with party games and some nibbles. Many thanks to the Friends of Southover for supporting us with our parties.
To replace our pantomime visit, each class will get to enjoy a film during the last week of term. In some classes, this may be certified PG, so watch out for a message from your child’s class teacher so you can let them know if you do not want your child to participate.
On Friday 18th December we are hoping to close with some carols on the playground, weather permitting (Y4, 5, 6 CHILDREN ONLY – sorry no parents/carers).
Throughout December, starting on Tuesday 1st, Christmas cards can be brought in to share WITH YOUR CHILD’S CLASS ONLY. There will be a postbox in each class and all cards will be quarantined for at least 48 hours before being handed out on Mondays. The last day for posting cards will be Friday 11th December.
The Christmas cards designed by the children and ordered as a fundraiser through the Friends have arrived and will be distributed on Monday 30th November (after quarantining).
Despite the challenges, we’re sure you’ll agree that there’s lots of festive fun in store for your children (and us!). Thank you in advance for your continued support.
